Base layers establish the base material definition of different parts of your texture. Fill and Paint layers are the most commonly used layer types to block out the foundation of your material.
Setting | Description |
---|---|
Allows you to rapidly fill your mesh with solid colors, texture maps, or materials (Library or custom). | |
Allows you to hand-paint detail with the Brush tool and create gradients with the Gradient tool. Learn more about the Paint tool in the Paint/Erase Brush section. |
Preview Area #
Shows a preview of the layer on the sphere.

Active Maps #
This section of the Layer Settings window includes activated texture maps of the Texture Project. Toggling a map on/off will determine whether the map is used. If a map is enabled, corresponding settings will appear below.

Projection #
The Projection settings control how the pixel data of the selected layer conforms to or unwraps onto the mesh.

Setting | Description |
---|---|
Projection Method | Sets the method for mapping the material properties onto the mesh. |
Projection Clamp (Tri-Planar Only) | Sets whether the projection area will be restricted or if regions outside the projection will repeat. |
Tiling U | Sets the scale of the material contents on the horizontal axis. |
Tiling V | Sets the scale of the material contents on the vertical axis. |
Link Tiling | Sets whether the aspect ratio is retained when adjusting the tiling settings. |
Offset U | Sets how far the material properties move on the horizontal axis. |
Offset V | Sets how far the material properties move on the vertical axis. |
Rotation | Sets the angle of the material properties. |
Edge Fade (Tri-Planar Only) | Sets how sharp or soft the transition is between the different axis or projection planes. |
Normal Map Influence | Sets how much the normal map affects the transitions between axis or projection planes. |
Projection Position X | Sets the X-axis 3D space position for the projection in relation to the texture project’s mesh(es). |
Projection Position Y | Sets the Y-axis 3D space position for the projection in relation to the texture project’s mesh(es). |
Projection Position Z | Sets the Z-axis 3D space position for the projection in relation to the texture project’s mesh(es). |
Projection Scale X | Sets the X-axis 3D space size for the projection in relation to the texture project’s mesh(es). |
Projection Scale Y | Sets the Y-axis 3D space size for the projection in relation to the texture project’s mesh(es). |
Projection Scale Z | Sets the Z-axis 3D space size for the projection in relation to the texture project’s mesh(es). |
Projection Rotation X | Sets the X-axis 3D space rotation for the projection in relation to the texture project’s mesh(es). |
Projection Rotation Y | Sets the Y-axis 3D space rotation for the projection in relation to the texture project’s mesh(es). |
Projection Rotation Z | Sets the Z-axis 3D space rotation for the projection in relation to the texture project’s mesh(es). |
Material Properties #
This section includes settings for textures and materials attached to the layer.

Setting | Description |
---|---|
Material Reference | Material attached to the selected layer. |
Material Preview | Small preview thumbnail of material used in this layer. |
Enable or disable the material attached to this layer. If disabled, the layer will preserve the settings and disable the material’s texture. Note: This only disables the attached material textures, so if a custom texture is added to any map slot, it will not be disabled by this option. | |
Material Name | The name of the material in the Library. |
Reset the reference material to its original state. | |
Reload the reference material from the disk. | |
Remove the reference material. | |
Create a copy of this material in the material editor. | |
Import material from disk. | |
Sample a given color or material data on the screen. |
Mask Settings #
These are layer settings that are displayed when working with mask layers. For more information on generic texture settings, please refer to Global Texture Settings.

Setting | Description |
---|---|
Receives texture content from the reference material. | |
Allows you to load a custom texture map. | |
Map Value (Grayscale Textures Only) | Sets the value for this map type. |
Map Color | Edit the color of the map. |
Tangent Orientation (Normal Map Only) | Interprets the normal map as either right- (Y+) or left-handed (Y-) coordinate space. |
Reset the map’s color to its original state. | |
Inverts the values of the map. | |
Contrast | Adjust the contrast for the map type. |
